Not necessarily. I have a friend that can attest to them working very well. In the end it’s about two people getting to know each other and if they like what they see/read/hear.
I’d say next step is calling, perhaps over a VOIP program. It’s hard to advance a friendship into a relationship if you can’t react to them in real time. Or see them react to you for that matter.
Plus in my (somewhat limited? Is 4 limited?) experience, cybersex/phonesex is what comes before an ‘official’ online/long-distance relationship. Mostly because cyber-kissing isn’t really a thing… but by all means, you can try to make it a thing! That sed if you can meet up irl that would be better once a foundation has been set. Really depends on distance and how well things are going.
